We have just topped up on a bunch of Doug Rogers shapes ( SHOP NOW ). In this latest batch we have the Single Flyer Swallow and the Double Flyer Swallow Tail designs. Both generous on foam, without sacrificing performance. Hand shaped by the Victorian shaping legend.
The Single Flyer can be surfed as an all-rounder and should serve you well in a variety of conditions. Like the Double Flyer, this shape has a fuller foil up front with a classic beaked nose. This extra foam through the nose gives you great paddle power. It also provides plenty of glide once you are up and riding. The design thins out considerably through the back 3rd. Finishing with a nice, sharp refined rail through the tail. For bite, sensitivity and maneuverability.
The Double Flyer allows more surface area in the shape. This extra area is great for maintaining momentum. Perfect for traversing flatter sections of the wave. Also somewhat looser to ride in smaller weaker waves. The Single Flyer has a touch narrower profile which gives it an edge in steeper, faster waves.
Doug is a big fan of flyers for designs like these. They allow the rider extra foam while retaining the nimbleness of a smaller performance shape. The flyers in both Doug Rogers Shapes break the outline curve, providing a distinct pivot point to turn from. Enabling you to redirect the board with ease. The flyers also reduce the area in the tail. This gives you more authority over the board and better grip on the wave face.
Both Doug Rogers Shapes have a fairly smooth, mid to low rocker. The bottom curve is a single to double concave with vee running out the last 6 inches of the tail. This bottom contour helps to give you a great balance of speed, lift and maneuverability. All coming together to make this quite a lively board to surf for it’s size.
