We now have the Channel Islands Sampler in store now hanging on our racks at Zak Surfboards. Are you looking for a board for less than ideal conditions but don’t want anything too weird or fishy that will change your approach? Then you might be wise to check out this new Channel Islands Sampler model – developed with their team rider Dane Reynolds, this is a high performance step-down. Intended to be ridden a little bit shorter and wider than your regular shortboard, the Sampler will add that bit of extra spark to your sessions in smaller and weaker surf, with our sacrificing performance.
This model has a fairly flat entry and center rocker for speed, with a generous amount of curve through the tail for tight arcs on smaller wave faces. The Sampler features a fairly deep single concave that runs through the length of the board. There is a touch of double concave within this single as it goes through the fins which then flattens to a small vee through the last few inches of the tail. This model has a fairly full outline outline broken by an exaggerated and slightly forward hip and a wide old-school squash tail.
These features combine to create a board that motors into waves, speeds down the line and has plenty of lift in smaller, mushier & flatter faced waves. Unlike a lot of small wave models though, the Sampler is still able to draw tight arcs on smaller wave faces and respond like a normal shortboard.
